• Community Service
Delta Gamma has recently become involved with a national DG program entitled the Golden Anchor program. However, at GW, we call it the “Delta Gramma” program. As a kind of Adopt-a-Senior program, DG’s have been fortunate enough to work with St. Mary’s Court and their wonderful seniors. Sisters who wish to participate in the program are paired with a senior. They then meet regularly, helping with groceries, the internet, or even playing Scrabble!

Along with this program, DG’s have begun giving free manicures to the women of St. Mary’s Court. The ladies love the many nail polish color choices and seeing their DG at these exciting events.

DG’s are also involved in many community service events on campus. Last semester, Delta Gammas along with other GWU students participated in the MLK Day of Service on Martin Luther King Day. The day of service was put on by the university and the Office of Community Service. Participants were bused to Anacostia High School, where they aided in painting the school.

Delta Gamma has had a long relationship with the Adaptive Services division of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. DGs volunteer on the first and third Saturdays of every month at the Technology Training sessions, held for visually impaired and blind patrons. At the Library, DG's help visitors up and down stairs, serve snacks, and listen to the inspiring stories of guest speakers.

Delta Gamma has also begun volunteering at MLK Library with the Afterschool Wilson High School program. This program was designed to teach middle and high school children about the computer, typing, and the technology now needed to join the work force. DG has pooled its resources to provide the program with volunteers once a week.

Each month, Delta Gammas at The George Washington University aid visually impaired community members by reading mail, going to the grocery store, or doing other errands. This not only gives us the opportunity to serve, but also to more fully understand our community. Several of the people we help around the community have come to speak at chapter about volunteering with the blind or visually impaired, approaching a guide dog, and helping the blind community in everyday life.

The Beta Rho chapter is able to take advantage of their great local in the center of our nation’s capitol. Each year, DG’s pair with the National Council for the Blind to help guide blind or visually impaired visitors on Capitol Hill. The guests meet with their Congressmen and Congresswomen about legislation to help their cause.

At GW, we are very fortunate to be in the middle of Washington, DC.  Delta Gamma volunteers with the Louisiana Honor Air program which flies up WWII veterans to see the memorial erected in their honor.  We greet them at the memorial on Saturday mornings and walk with them to see their state pillar and visit with them about their service.

DGs volounteer each year in DC at the Avon Breast Cancer walk to cheer on the walkers at the finish line.  It's so neat when women cross the finish line and we come to find that they too were DGs in college.
